This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Micronesian Imperial-Pigeon, scientifically known as Ducula oceanica, a native bird species endemic to the Micronesia region in the western Pacific Ocean. The image is taken from Prideaux John Selby's volume "Pigeons" in Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, published by W.H. Lizars in Edinburgh in 1835. The illustration was created by the renowned English artist Edward Lear, who is best known for his literary nonsense and illustrations.
