EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait showcases Infanta Maria del Pilar de Borbon y Borbon (1861-1879), the beloved daughter of Queen Isabel II of Spain. Born on October 22, 1861, in the Royal Palace of Madrid, Maria del Pilar was the fourth child and third daughter of the Queen. Her father was King Felipe V of Bourbon, making her a member of the House of Bourbon. The Infanta's striking appearance is beautifully captured in this engraving from La Ilustración Española y Americana, published in 1879. Dressed in the elegant attire of the time, Maria del Pilar exudes a sense of grace and innocence. Her expressive eyes, framed by long lashes, gaze directly at the viewer, inviting a connection. Infanta Maria del Pilar's life was marked by tragedy. At the tender age of eight, she lost her mother, Queen Isabel II, who was exiled from Spain following a military uprising. The young Infanta and her siblings were sent to live in France under the care of their aunt, Queen Isabella II of Portugal. Despite the hardships, Maria del Pilar remained a symbol of hope and resilience for the Spanish people. Her father, King Felipe V, died in 1874, leaving her as the heir to the Spanish throne. However, her reign was short-lived as she passed away on November 29, 1879, at the age of eighteen, due to complications from tuberculosis. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of the Infanta's brief but significant life and her connection to Spanish history. Maria del Pilar's legacy continues to inspire generations, leaving a lasting impact on the Spanish monarchy and the hearts of her people.
