EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of the explosive assault on the Hohenzollern Redoubt during the First World War. The Hohenzollern Redoubt, a formidable German fortification located near Auchy-les-Mines in France, had long posed a significant threat to the Allied forces on the Western Front. On the fateful evening of 2nd March 1916, the 8th and 9th Royal Fusiliers, with support from the 7th Royal Sussex and 11th Middlesex Battalions, prepared for a daring attack. At around 6 p.m., a colossal 32,000 lbs of explosives were detonated beneath the redoubt's trenches, creating the four massive craters visible in this image. The blast was designed to weaken the German defenses and provide an opportunity for the British forces to advance. As the smoke cleared, the Allied troops charged forward, facing fierce resistance from the German forces. Despite several counter-attacks, the British were able to secure the strategically valuable position, marking a significant victory in the ongoing battle for control of the Western Front. The Hohenzollern Redoubt craters remain a poignant reminder of the brutal and destructive nature of trench warfare during the First World War. This photograph, taken shortly after the explosion, offers a glimpse into the chaos and intensity of the conflict, as well as the determination and courage of the soldiers who fought in it.
