EDITORS COMMENTS
Francisco Goya's Caprices, a series of 82 etchings, represents a pivotal moment in the artist's career and the development of European art. Created between 1797 and 1798 during the tumultuous period of the Peninsular War and the subsequent political upheaval in Spain, these prints reflect Goya's biting social commentary and satirical critique of society. Plaque 58, titled "Swalow it, dog," is a striking example of Goya's Caprices. In this image, a man force-feeds a dog, an act of cruelty and dominance. The dog's expression of fear and submission is palpable, while the man's smug satisfaction is evident in his posture and gaze. The title of the print, "Swalow it, dog," adds an element of irony and power dynamics, as the man's command is not just for the dog but could also be interpreted as a commentary on the subjugation of the Spanish people during this time. Goya's Caprices were groundbreaking in their time, as they challenged the traditional themes and styles of the 18th century. These etchings are considered some of the earliest examples of Romanticism in Spanish art and paved the way for the artist's later works, including his famous Black Paintings. This print, Swalow it, is part of the extensive collection of the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain, which holds the largest and most comprehensive collection of Goya's works. The Prado Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of European art and the works of Francisco Goya.
