Born in Sussex, Cobden rose to prominence as a leading advocate for free trade, becoming a driving force behind the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. The Corn Laws, protective tariffs on imported grain, had long been a contentious issue in British politics, with many arguing that they protected domestic agriculture at the expense of manufacturing industries and the working class. Cobden, however, believed that free trade would benefit all parties by increasing economic efficiency, reducing costs, and fostering international cooperation.
