EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the title page of "Trap des Levens" a renowned work by J. Cats titled "Houwelyck" from 1625-1635. The page depicts eight distinct phases of life, starting from childhood in the bottom left corner and progressing through adulthood to death in the bottom right corner. The composition cleverly contrasts the young side with blooming trees and radiant sunshine, while the old side portrays bare trees under ominous clouds. At the center of this intricate design is a medallion held by two cherubic putti. Inside it, two pigeons gaze at each other, symbolizing unity, accompanied by intertwined hands as an emblem of connection. Above them floats a sheet of paper bearing the title, upheld by six more playful putti. A beautifully adorned cartouche frames this central scene, featuring a four-line poem in Dutch that divides human life into various stages—three, four, seven or twelve stages are suggested. The artwork was expertly etched on paper measuring 191 mm in height and 151 mm in width by Pieter de Jode (I), an esteemed artist mentioned on the object itself. This remarkable piece captures not only the essence of human existence but also showcases exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
