EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the remnants of St Brides Church in London, following a devastating fire bombing during World War II on the night of December 29, 1940. The image, taken by renowned photographer Bedford Lemere in March 1941, reveals the desolate aftermath of the attack that pierced the roof and gutted the interior of this historic church. Originally rebuilt to the designs of Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London in 1666, St Brides Church stood as a symbol of resilience and continuity for over 300 years. However, the Blitz brought a sudden and devastating end to its earlier form. In the aftermath of the destruction, the decision was made to rebuild the church using Wren's surviving walls. Rebuilding efforts began in 1953, and the church was rededicated in 1957. Today, St Brides Church continues to stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of London and its people, having weathered both the Great Fire and the challenges of World War II. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the past, while also highlighting the remarkable ability of communities to rebuild and recover in the face of adversity.
