Degenerate Days!!, 1874. Artist: Joseph Swain

Degenerate Days!!, 1874. A publican and his customer discuss the forthcoming General Election. After being in power since 1868, the Liberal Prime Minister, Gladstone, had called the Election for 5th March 1874. He did not formally tender his resignation to Queen Victoria until mid February and, for the first time, the procedures put in place by the new Ballot Act were to be tried and tested. One of the procedures provided for a secret method of voting which was designed to rid the system of the rampant corruption that had previously been associated with candidates buying of votes. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 14, 1874

Degenerate Days!!, 1874 - A Snapshot of Political Conversations in a Victorian Pub

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print, we are transported back to the vibrant political atmosphere of 19th century Britain. The scene unfolds within the cozy confines of an inn, where a publican and his customer engage in a lively discussion about the forthcoming General Election. As the Liberal Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone, prepares to relinquish power after six years at the helm, anticipation fills the air. The election is scheduled for March 5th, 1874, marking an important moment in British history as it will be one of the first tests of newly implemented voting procedures under the Ballot Act. The artist Joseph Swain masterfully captures this pivotal period with satire and caricature. His detailed engraving showcases various elements that define this era – from top-hatted gentlemen engaged in conversation to political rosettes adorning their lapels. While focusing on these two men engrossed in debate, Swain also subtly hints at other key figures who shaped Victorian politics. Queen Victoria herself looms above them all as she awaits Gladstone's formal resignation before granting her approval for new leadership. Through this remarkable heritage image partnership between Benjamin Disraeli (Earl of Beaconsfield), John Tenniel (Sir John Tenniel), and Joseph Swain himself; we are given a glimpse into a time when politics permeated every aspect of society – even conversations over pints at local taverns like this one.
