EDITORS COMMENTS
the George Owen Knapp house, located on Sycamore Canyon Road in Montecito, California, is a stunning example of Italianate mission style architecture captured in this beautiful 1917 photograph by renowned American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston. The house was originally designed by Ralph Radcliffe-Whitehead and built by Christopher Tornoe in 1911 for George Owen Knapp. Later expansions were carried out by E. Russell Ray in 1911. The lower garden in the foreground of the image was designed by Francis Townsend Underhill in 1914, showcasing a vibrant array of flowers and plants. The upper garden, with its winding paths and terraced levels, was designed by Carlton Monroe Winslow with Charles Gibbs Adams around the same time. The estate was meticulously maintained by Charles R. Waugh, the estate superintendent, and John Scott, the head gardener. The photograph, hand-colored and tinted, offers a glimpse into the lush and beautiful gardens that surrounded the Knapp house. The roses and other flowers in bloom add a pop of color to the verdant landscape, while the intricate details of the house's architecture are highlighted against the natural backdrop. This image is a testament to the beauty and elegance of early 20th century American garden design and the artistry of Frances Benjamin Johnston in capturing it on film. The photograph is part of the George Marshall Bielau Collection at the Library of Congress, Washington D.C. and is a valuable addition to the historical record of American garden design and architecture during this period. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving our heritage and the beauty that can be found in the gardens and homes of our past.
