Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "A Sudan Cotton Field" is part of the series Empire Trade is Growing, created by Edward Barnard Lintott. Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board in the early 20th century, this artwork was intended to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire. The image showcases a vast cotton field in Sudan, highlighting the agricultural abundance and economic potential of this region under British rule. The vibrant colors captured through lithography bring to life the lush greenery and golden hues of the cotton plants, evoking a sense of prosperity and growth. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, this print is one among many artist-designed posters acquired during that era. These posters aimed to instill an empire-conscious consumer mindset among Britons, encouraging them to support products from across their dominions and colonies. While these artworks serve as historical artifacts reflecting Britain's imperial past, they also raise important questions about its legacy today. For contemporary viewers, these images may evoke uncomfortable beliefs associated with colonialism and prompt critical reflection on power dynamics between nations. Nevertheless, this photograph remains a testament to Lintott's artistic talent and his ability to capture both beauty and complexity within a single frame. It serves as a reminder of how art can provoke dialogue around historical events while showcasing different perspectives on our shared history.
