EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a cocked hat from 1813, crafted with luxurious black beaver fur. The hat belonged to Erasmus Goodwin, an esteemed officer of the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards, who served as the Regimental Paymaster from 1805 to 1817. During his time in service, Goodwin bravely fought alongside his unit in the Peninsular War from 1811 to 1813. However, tragedy struck when he fell ill during his deployment and was forced to return home. Sadly, Goodwin's health never fully recovered, leading to his untimely demise in 1817. This extraordinary piece of headwear serves as a poignant reminder of one man's dedication and sacrifice for his country. Preserved at the National Army Museum in London, this historic artifact not only symbolizes the bravery and commitment of soldiers like Goodwin but also represents the importance of financial management within military operations. As a paymaster, Goodwin played a crucial role in ensuring that fellow soldiers received their wages promptly and accurately. Through this evocative image captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, we are transported back in time to witness both the beauty and significance of this remarkable cocked hat worn by an honorable soldier whose life was tragically cut short due to illness.
