The Great Pagoda, Mootoo Alaghur and East Gopurum from Tank, 1858 (albumen print from waxed paper negative) by Tripe, Linnaeus (1822-1902); 31.4x38.3 cm; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Canada; (add.info.: In 1855, Tripe was commissioned to take photographs for the British East India Company and the Madras Presidency which resulted in six albums. Madurai in the modern state of Tamil Nadu. Meenakshi Amman Temple is a Hindu temple located on the south side of river Vaigai in Madurai and is dedicated to Parvati / Meenakshi, and her consort, Shiva as Sundareswarar. The temple forms the heart and lifeline of the 2500 year old city. The complex houses 14 gopurams (gateway towers) ranging from 45-50m in height. The temple is a significant symbol for the Tamil people, and has been mentioned since antiquity in Tamil literature, though the present structure was built during 1623 to 1655 CE.
