EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from 1916, we witness a momentous occasion as Sir Edward Ward, a prominent figure in London's Metropolitan Police force, inspects between 1,500 and 1,700 specials of the N Division. The grand event takes place on the grounds of Drapers School at Tottenham. The image showcases not only the ordinary features of a parade but also highlights several crucial aspects of special constabulary work during World War I. Among them are the air raid breakdown gangs who play an essential role in ensuring public safety during times of conflict. Their equipment is meticulously inspected by Sir Edward Ward himself. Additionally, other vital divisions such as ambulance services and motor transport are put under scrutiny to guarantee their readiness for any emergency situation that may arise amidst war and conflict. Accompanying this impressive display is none other than the band of the division itself. Their melodious tunes resonate through the photograph, adding an air of solemnity and pride to this remarkable gathering. This poignant snapshot serves as a testament to both volunteerism and dedication exhibited by these special constables who selflessly served their community during one of history's most challenging periods.
