EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving is a stunning representation of three diverse marine species: Sesura, Labrus viridis, and seabream, Pagrus pagrus. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The intricate details of each fish are brought to life through the meticulous engraving by Massard, under the direction of Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Sesura, also known as the Hippolyte or the Three-spotted Wrasse, is depicted in the center of the image. Its vibrant yellow and black stripes are accentuated by the delicate application of color. To its left, the Labrus viridis, or the European Seabass, is shown with its distinctive olive-green body and white spots. The seabream, or Pagrus pagrus, is illustrated on the right, its silvery scales shimmering against the dark background. This beautiful engraving is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published between 1816 and 1830. The work was a groundbreaking reference book for natural history, showcasing the most accurate and detailed illustrations of the time. With its intricate detail and masterful use of color, this engraving is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the naturalists and artists of the early 19th century.
