EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time at the Quex Park Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) Hospital in 1917. The image is filled with a sense of community and camaraderie as patients and VAD staff gather together, surrounded by the beautiful grounds of Quex Park. At the heart of the scene is Hannah Powell-Cotton, Commandant of the Birchington Detachment, seated proudly in her dark blue uniform. Her husband, Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, was the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum located on the estate. Most of the VAD staff and some patients are wearing flower buttonholes, adding a touch of elegance and cheer to the scene. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on October 15, 1914, and remained in operation until January 31, 1919. The VAD played a crucial role in providing care and support to wounded soldiers during World War I. This photograph offers a glimpse into the daily life of the hospital and the dedication of those who worked and were cared for there.
