EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite and camaraderie among the patients of the Quex Park VAD Hospital in 1918. The Mess, located in the Winter Garden of the hospital, served as a communal space where patients could gather, socialize, and enjoy their meals. The large conservatory, situated between Quex House and the Museum buildings, provided a warm and welcoming environment, especially during the cold and damp English winter. The men in the photograph are dressed in the hospital blues uniform, consisting of a blue serge jacket and trousers, white shirt, and red tie. The Quex Park VAD Hospital, run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, opened on 15 October 1914, and closed on 31 January 1919. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton of Quex Park, who founded the Powell-Cotton Museum. Hannah Powell-Cotton, born in 1881, played a crucial role in the hospital's operation, providing essential support and care to the wounded soldiers during the First World War. The photograph offers a poignant reminder of the human spirit and the importance of community and companionship, even in the most challenging of circumstances. The patients of Quex Park VAD Hospital found solace and strength in each other, creating a sense of unity and hope amidst the hardships of war.
