A painting depiction of Sydney, circa 1809, as Governor Lachlan Macquarie found it. On the left hand side is Government House and its garden. On the water??s edge is a storehouse which stood close to the site of the Customs House. St. Phillip??s Church with its round tower is seen on the other side, with the Orphan School and Underwood??s house in front of it. The long white house ?? one window of which is on the left picture and the remainder on the right remainder on the right is the jail at Essex and George Streets. To the right of the jail on the water??s edge are Isaac Nichols?? warehouse and residence. To the right of these is the dock-yard. The row of buildings behind the dock is the hospital and surgeons residences in George Street, North. The flagstaff and windmill are on the site of the Observatory. Date: circa 1809
