EDITORS COMMENTS
Maria Theresa of Spain, Daughter of Philip IV, was born on November 27, 1638, in Madrid, Spain. At the age of 15, she was married to King Louis XIV of France in 1650, making her the Queen of France and Queen of Navarre. This stunning handcoloured lithograph is a faithful reproduction of a portrait from Roger de Gaignieres gallery portfolio X 52, published in Paris by Le Bibliophile Jacob under the title "Historical Costumes of France" in 1852. Maria Theresa is depicted in the image wearing a sumptuous and elegant gown of the late 17th century. The dress is made of a rich, velvet fabric, adorned with intricate gold embroidery and lace. The high neckline is adorned with a lace collar, and the long sleeves are also covered in lace. A matching lace mantilla is draped over her shoulders, adding an air of regality and sophistication to her appearance. Her hair is styled in elaborate curls, held in place by a diamond and pearl diadem. Maria Theresa's marriage to Louis XIV was a politically strategic move, aimed at strengthening the alliance between France and Spain. Despite the age difference between the couple, they had a strong and loving relationship. Maria Theresa was known for her intelligence, grace, and piety, and she played an important role in the French court, acting as a mediator between her husband and his ministers. The portrait captures the essence of Maria Theresa's beauty and elegance, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical art or costume. The intricate details of her gown and the rich colors of the lithograph bring the past to life, transporting us back to the opulent and ornate world of the French court in the late 17th century.
