Anne, Duchess of Brittany, Queen of France (1477-1514): A Regal Portrait in Historical Costume This exquisite hand-colored lithograph depicts Anne, Duchess of Brittany, who held the unique title of Queen of France twice, in the years 1491-1492 and 1505-1514. The portrait is based on a miniature painting by Jean Marot, which was part of Bernard de Montfaucon's collection. Anne de Bretagne, born in 1477, was a powerful and influential figure during the French Renaissance. She was the heiress of the Duchy of Brittany and was married to King Charles VIII of France in 1491. Their union was short-lived, as King Charles died only a few months after their marriage. Anne's second marriage to King Louis XII of France in 1505 secured her position as Queen of France for the second time. In this portrait, Anne is depicted wearing the regal attire of the French court. She wears a richly decorated gown with a high neckline and long, flowing sleeves. The gown is adorned with intricate gold embroidery and pearls, symbolizing her high rank and wealth. Her hair is styled in elaborate braids and is topped with a diadem, further emphasizing her royal status. The portrait is a stunning example of the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the time. The hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, bringing Anne's regal presence to life. This portrait is a testament to the beauty and power of the French Renaissance court and the remarkable woman who graced it with her presence.
