EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases two captivating bird species: the Goldcrest (Regulus regulus) and the European Roller (Coracias garrulus). The Goldcrest, a tiny and vibrant bird, is the smallest European bird species and can be identified by its bright yellow underparts, olive-green back, and distinctive black and white wing bars. Perched on the pine tree branches, this bird appears alert and curious, its tiny beak poised as if ready for foraging. The European Roller, on the other hand, is a striking bird with its blue-green back, red underparts, and black and white stripes on its belly. This bird is known for its unique rolling flight, where it flies low to the ground, flipping its body in mid-air to expose its underparts, making it an easy target for predators. The roller in this engraving is shown in a more static pose, perched on a tree limb, its vivid plumage on full display. Both birds are native to Europe and are important components of their respective ecosystems. The Goldcrest is a year-round resident in most of Europe, while the European Roller is a summer migrant, traveling to Africa during the winter months. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the intricate details of these birds but also highlights the artistry and craftsmanship of the time. It is a testament to the fascination and appreciation for the natural world that existed during the 19th century, making it a valuable addition to any collection of ornithological or zoological prints.
