The European Roller (Coracias garrulus) is a species of bird belonging to the Coraciiformes order, and is native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. The roller has a bright blue head, back and wings with a chestnut-brown belly. Its long tail has black and white stripes. This species feeds mainly on insects but will also eat small reptiles, amphibians, fruits and seeds. It nests in cavities in trees or cliffs and lays 3-5 eggs per clutch which are incubated for about 18 days by both parents. The European Roller is an important indicator of healthy ecosystems as it requires open habitats with plenty of food sources for its survival. As such it is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as deforestation and urbanization.
