EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the Fishmongers Almshouses in London, located in the area west of Newington Butts and south of St. Georges Road, in the late 1870s. The almshouses were established in two distinct phases. The first phase saw the construction of St. Peter's Hospital between 1615 and 1618 by an unknown company, providing shelter and care for the poor and needy. The second phase, funded by a benefactor named Hulbert in 1719, added accommodations for an additional 20 impoverished individuals. The Fishmongers Almshouses, a charitable institution, stood proudly for over 200 years before they were demolished in 1851. Their residents were then relocated to newly constructed buildings in East Hill, Wandsworth. The history of these almshouses is a testament to the compassion and generosity of those who came before us, providing a sanctuary for the less fortunate in their time of need. The photograph, taken in 1875, shows the almshouses in their final years, with their red-brick facade and quaint, arched windows. The image offers a glimpse into the past, providing a poignant reminder of the importance of community and care for the vulnerable members of society.
