EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor painting is Plate 33 from a bound volume of drawings of flowers from Italy and Madeira, and of fungi from Ringwood, Hants, created between 1870 and 1885 by the talented British botanical artist, Adeline Frances Mary Duppa (1845-1895). The depicted subject is Lantana camara, a vibrant and invasive shrub belonging to the Verbenaceae family, native to tropical America. Duppa's masterful use of color and detail brings the flower to life, showcasing its intricate structure and alluring beauty. The Lantana camara is adorned with a profusion of small, tubular, two-lipped flowers that bloom in shades of pink, red, and yellow. The plant's leaves are a glossy green, and its stems are covered in small, fine hairs. As a member of the Magnoliophyta division, Lantana camara is a flowering plant, and as a monocotyledon, it falls under the Poales order, along with grasses and sedges. The presence of Carex arenaria, a common sand sedge, in the background adds a sense of context and natural habitat to the composition. Adeline Frances Mary Duppa was a remarkable figure in the world of botanical illustration, and her work continues to inspire and captivate audiences today. Her dedication to accurately and beautifully documenting the natural world is evident in this stunning watercolor painting of Lantana camara, which is held in the Library and Archives and dates back to 1891.
