EDITORS COMMENTS
This model head, crafted by Maurice Wilson in the 20th century, offers a glimpse into the intriguing world of our early human ancestor, Homo neanderthalensis, also known as Neanderthal man. Neanderthals are believed to have inhabited Europe and Asia between approximately 130,000 and 35,000 years ago, making them contemporaries of our own Homo sapiens lineage. Neanderthals were part of the larger family tree of primates, classified under the order Primates, family Hominidae, and subfamily Homininae. They were hominids, or great apes, sharing a common ancestry with both humans and chimpanzees. Neanderthals were also part of the superorder Haplorhini, which includes tarsiers, lorises, and anthropoids, such as monkeys and humans. Anatomy-wise, Neanderthals were distinct from modern humans, with a more robust build, a prominent brow ridge, and a larger braincase. Their faces, as depicted in this model, were also flatter and more protruding, with a pronounced chin and a recessed forehead. Maurice Wilson, a skilled model maker, meticulously crafted this Neanderthal head, providing a tangible connection to our ancient past. This model serves as a testament to the rich history of human evolution and our shared ancestry with Neanderthals, our fellow Eutherian mammals and Hominoidea, the primate superorder that includes lemurs, lorises, tarsiers, monkeys, apes, and humans. This intriguing artifact, created between 1914 and 1987, offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of our Neanderthal ancestors and the complex web of life that connects us all.
