Glossopteris indica, Antarctic fossil leaf
Fossilised plant leaf collected by Robert Falcon Scotts British Antarctic Expedition 1910-1913, also known as the Terra Nova expedition. On the return from the South Pole, the chief of scientific staff Wilson collected this specimen that was later found among the 16 kilogrammes of geology specimens found near the Polar Partys last camp. It contained remains of the extinct plant Glossopteris indica, evidence that Antarctica was once part of the supercontinent Gondwana. Fossilised plants also showed that the climate of Antarctica had been very different in the past

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Piece of Antarctic History: The Discovery of Glossopteris Indica, a Fossilized Leaf from the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913) 2.. This photograph showcases a fossilized leaf, identified as Glossopteris indica, collected during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), led by the renowned explorer Robert Falcon Scott. The leaf was discovered by the expedition's chief scientific staff, Dr. Edward Wilson, among the 16 kilogrammes (35 pounds) of geology specimens unearthed near the Polar Party's last camp. The Glossopteris indica leaf is a significant find, as it provides compelling evidence that Antarctica was once part of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. This discovery, along with other fossilized plants found in the region, revealed that the climate of Antarctica had been vastly different in the past. The Glossopteris indica is a member of the Pteridospermophyta division, specifically the Arberiales order and the Glossopteridaceae family. This extinct plant is characterized by its large, leathery leaves and woody, seed-bearing structures. The discovery of these fossilized leaves in Antarctica suggests that the region was once covered in woodlands and forests, quite unlike the barren, icy landscape we know today. This remarkable find is a testament to the groundbreaking work of the British Antarctic Expedition, which aimed to explore and understand the mysteries of the polar world. The expedition, which ended tragically with the deaths of Scott and his companions, left behind a wealth of scientific knowledge and treasures, including this precious fossilized leaf. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history and scientific discoveries that lie hidden beneath the ice and snow of Antarctica, waiting to be uncovered by future explorers and researchers.
