EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Elizabeth Charlotte Lucy Asquith, later known as Princess Bibesco, and renowned stage and film actor Nelson Keys are seen deep in rehearsals for a sketch in the Serbian Relief Fund Matinee of 1916. The matinee was organized by Lady Greville and Lady Oranmore and Browne as part of the extensive fundraising efforts during the First World War. Elizabeth Asquith, the daughter of British Prime Minister Herbert Asquith and his second wife, Margot, was an accomplished English writer and a passionate amateur actress. Her involvement in theatrical fundraising activities during the war was a natural extension of her artistic pursuits and her commitment to philanthropy. Nelson Keys, born in 1886, was a celebrated figure on the British stage and screen. His presence in the Serbian Relief Fund Matinee not only added star power to the event but also lent credibility to the cause. The photograph captures the intensity and focus of their rehearsal, with Elizabeth Asquith intently studying her lines and Nelson Keys offering guidance and direction. The backdrop of the First World War and the charitable purpose of their performance adds a layer of significance to this moment, highlighting the resilience and resourcefulness of the British society during a time of great adversity. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the power of art and community in times of crisis, and the enduring spirit of those who came together to make a difference. The Serbian Relief Fund Matinee, held on 9 May 1916, was just one of the many initiatives undertaken by Elizabeth Asquith and others to support the war effort and provide relief to those in need.
