The Church of St. Thomas, also known as St. Thomas Episcopal Church, is a historic landmark located in the heart of Manhattan's Upper East Side. The Duke of Marlborough, a British aristocrat and military hero, had married the American heiress, Consuelo Vanderbilt, in a lavish and highly publicized ceremony. Consuelo, known for her beauty and wealth, was the daughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, a prominent American industrialist and railroad magnate. The marriage was a strategic union, as the Duke sought to secure financial stability for himself and his family.
