EDITORS COMMENTS
In this stunning black-and-white photograph, the Duke of Marlborough, Charles Spencer-Churchill (1871-1934), and his bride, Consuelo Vanderbilt (1877-1964), exchange vows during their wedding ceremony at the Church of St. Thomas in New York City on November 6, 1895. The Church of St. Thomas, also known as St. Thomas Episcopal Church, is a historic landmark located in the heart of Manhattan's Upper East Side. The Duke of Marlborough, a British aristocrat and military hero, had married the American heiress, Consuelo Vanderbilt, in a lavish and highly publicized ceremony. Consuelo, known for her beauty and wealth, was the daughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, a prominent American industrialist and railroad magnate. The marriage was a strategic union, as the Duke sought to secure financial stability for himself and his family. The ceremony was attended by an esteemed guest list, including members of high society from both America and Europe. Among the attendees were the Duke's cousin, the 9th Duke of Marlborough, and the Duke's future political allies, such as Winston S. Churchill and Algernon Balsan. The wedding was a grand affair, with elaborate decorations, a lavish reception, and a honeymoon aboard the Duke's yacht. The newlyweds' union marked the beginning of a tumultuous marriage, filled with scandal, infidelity, and ultimately, divorce. Despite the challenges, the marriage produced two children, and Consuelo went on to become the Duchess of Marlborough and a prominent figure in British society. This photograph captures a moment of joy and celebration in the lives of the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, a moment that would be forever etched in history.
