Claude Bernard (11 March 1813 – 10 February 1878) was a pioneering French physician and physiologist, considered one of the founders of the experimental approach to medicine. This striking colored engraving, produced in 1878 by The Academy for Universal Illustrated Weekly, captures Bernard in the prime of his career. The image shows him dressed in the formal attire of the time, wearing a bow tie and a dark suit, with a serious yet contemplative expression on his face. Born in Lyon, France, Bernard studied medicine at the University of Lyon and later at the Paris Faculty of Medicine. He became a professor of physiology at the Sorbonne in 1854 and went on to make groundbreaking discoveries in the fields of physiology and pharmacology. Among his most notable contributions were his studies on the role of the pituitary gland in regulating metabolism and his experiments on the influence of the environment (milieu interieur) on the function of living organisms.
