EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, hailing from the archives of yesteryears, presents the Baltic Copper Mine Cricket Club of Painesdale, Michigan, USA, in action during the early 1910s. The Baltic Mine Cricket Team was an integral part of the Copper (Houghton) County Cricket League, which was established in 1906. The league was a unique phenomenon, as it was comprised of local mining communities, primarily made up of Cornish tin miners who had relocated to the Michigan area due to the closure of their mines in Cornwall, England. Each mine in the region had its own cricket side, with Baltic Mine being one of them. The Baltic Mine first commenced operations in 1897, spending two decades as an independent entity before being absorbed by Copper Range in 1917. The team members, proudly showcased in this image, were the employees and staff of the Baltic Mine, who found solace and camaraderie in the sport of cricket during their leisure hours. The scene unfolds at the picturesque cricket ground, with the team members dressed in their cricket whites, poised and focused. The wicket-keeper is in position, gloves at the ready, while batsmen take their stance at the crease. The stumps are in place, and the pavilion in the background hints at the comforts and amenities available to the players. The image is a testament to the rich history of cricket in America and the unique cultural heritage of the mining communities in Michigan during the early 20th century.
