Zoothera Monticola, Long-billed Thrush. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving

Zoothera Monticola, Long-billed Thrush. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of the Zoothera Monticola, commonly known as the Long-billed Thrush. Originating from the majestic Himalaya Mountains, this engraving from 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould is a testament to their remarkable talent and passion for ornithology. John Gould, renowned as a taxidermist and fondly referred to as the bird-stuffer by the Zoological Society, became enamored with avian species from eastern regions in the late 1820s. His fascination peaked when a collection of birds arrived at the society's museum from the Himalayan mountains. Inspired by these magnificent creatures, he conceived an ambitious project – publishing an imperial folio-sized volume featuring hand-colored lithographs of eighty different species, including figures of one hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould played a pivotal role in bringing these illustrations to life. With her exceptional artistic skills, she meticulously crafted drawings that were then transferred onto large lithographic stones. These extraordinary works are now famously known as "Gould plates". The print captures not only the striking appearance of this Asian thrush but also its exotic charm and intricate details. The vibrant colors and lifelike portrayal transport viewers back to early 19th-century natural history studies. Displayed against a background that complements its elegance, this close-up image allows us to appreciate every feathered contour and subtle marking on this mesmerizing creature. It serves as a testament to both British and European artistry while offering insights into animal behavior through meticulous observation. Quint Lox's photograph truly encapsulates the essence of this rare bird species while paying homage to John and Elizabeth Gould's invaluable contributions in documenting our natural world during their time.
