EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artwork titled "Winged Putto Riding Sea Horse Lion Raphael verso". Created by the talented artist Denijs Calvaert, a Netherlandish painter from Antwerp in the late 16th century, this piece is believed to be inspired by the renowned Italian artist Raphael. The double-sided sheet features an intricate composition executed with pen, brown ink, black chalk, charcoal, red touches highlighted with white gouache on blue paper. On one side of the sheet is an exquisite depiction of three graceful figures known as "The Three Graces" while on the other side rests this enigmatic work featuring a winged putto riding atop a sea horse lion. Unfortunately, due to its age and wear over time, much of the original details have faded away or become illegible. However, at the bottom of this masterpiece lies a faint signature and date attributed to Dionisio Calvaert himself. This recently recognized artwork holds immense historical value as it sheds light on Calvaert's artistic prowess and his connection to Raphael's legacy. Despite its current state of preservation being compromised, this print allows us to appreciate fragments of Calvaert's genius brushwork and glimpse into his birthplace in Antwerp. A true testament to artistry transcending time and borders!
