Pyrrhula Erythrocephala, Red-headed Bullfinch. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains

Pyrrhula Erythrocephala, Red-headed Bullfinch. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning Pyrrhula Erythrocephala, commonly known as the Red-headed Bullfinch. Originating from the majestic Himalaya Mountains, this exotic bird has been beautifully captured in an engraving dating back to 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould, renowned for his taxidermy skills and fondly referred to as the "bird-stuffer" developed a deep fascination with birds from the east during the late 1820s. This passion was ignited when a collection of avian species from the Himalayas arrived at the Zoological Society's museum where he worked. Inspired by these magnificent creatures, Gould conceived an ambitious project - publishing a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty different species and depicting one hundred individual birds. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life; she meticulously created drawings of each bird which were then transferred onto large lithographic stones. These remarkable works are now famously known as "Gould plates". The image captures not only the vibrant colors and intricate details of this Asian beauty but also provides us with a glimpse into early nineteenth-century natural history illustration. The close-up view allows us to appreciate every feather and marking on this extraordinary creature. This print is part of Liszt Collection's extensive archive that celebrates British artistry, European influence, and our enduring fascination with nature's wonders throughout history.
