Lamprotornis Spilopterus, winged Starling

Lamprotornis Spilopterus, winged Starling. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of the Lamprotornis Spilopterus, also known as the winged Starling. Originating from the majestic Himalaya Mountains, this bird species has been immortalized in an engraving created by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould in 1831. John Gould, renowned for his taxidermy skills and nicknamed "the bird-stuffer" became infatuated with birds from the East when a collection of avian specimens arrived at the Zoological Society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by these magnificent creatures, he conceived the idea of publishing a volume featuring hand-colored lithographs of eighty different species, including figures of one hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing these illustrations to life. She meticulously made drawings that were then transferred onto large lithographic stones. These remarkable artworks are now famously referred to as "Gould plates". The image captures every intricate detail of this Asian starling's plumage and tail feathers against a stunning background. The vibrant colors beautifully complement its exotic appearance, making it truly mesmerizing to behold. Dating back to the early 19th century, this illustration is not only a testament to English artistry but also serves as an invaluable resource for natural history enthusiasts. It offers insight into animal behavior and markings while showcasing British and European artistic talent from that era. Displayed within books and manuscripts or admired individually, this print transports viewers back in time while celebrating nature's wonders through Quint Lox's lens at Liszt Cultural Institute.
