Time-exposure showing meteor track & star trails
Meteor track. Nocturnal time-exposure image over trees of a meteor track (top left) among many star trails. The meteor track is longer and brighter than the star trails. Meteors originate as tiny interplanetary dust grains travelling between 35 and 95 km/s. As a meteor falls to Earth it burns up. The meteors path can be seen as a streak of light known as a shooting star. This meteor is a Perseid. Perseids appear in great numbers around the 12th of August when the Earth crosses a band of dust called the meteor stream. Star trails are made by the movement of the stars through the sky as the Earth rotates. Photographed in Finland

EDITORS COMMENTS
This time-exposure print captures the mesmerizing beauty of a meteor track and star trails against a backdrop of towering trees. In the top left corner, a brilliant streak of light cuts through the darkness, marking the path of a shooting star - a Perseid meteor. These meteors, born from minuscule interplanetary dust grains hurtling through space at astonishing speeds between 35 and 95 km/s, ignite as they enter Earth's atmosphere. The radiant trail left by this particular Perseid meteor is longer and brighter than the surrounding star trails that adorn the night sky. Star trails are formed by the apparent movement of stars as our planet rotates on its axis. As we gaze upon this image captured in Finland, we witness nature's celestial dance frozen in time. Perseids are known to grace our skies abundantly around August 12th when Earth crosses paths with a band of cosmic debris called the meteor stream. This phenomenon creates an awe-inspiring spectacle for stargazers worldwide. Through this remarkable photograph, Science Photo Library invites us to marvel at both the fleeting brilliance of shooting stars and the enduring majesty of star trails painted across our nocturnal canvas. It serves as a reminder that even amidst life's constant motion and change, there is timeless wonder waiting to be discovered in every corner of our vast universe.
