Total solar eclipse, 1860
Total solar eclipse, 1860. Series of images of the Sun during the totality of a total solar eclipse. The disc of the Moon is covering the disc of the Sun so that only the Suns corona (atmosphere) is visible. This photograph, taken by the British astronomer Warren de la Rue, proved that the flares around an eclipse were solar in origin. The moment of totality lasts for only a few minutes. Total solar eclipses usually occur less than once a year and can only be seen from a small area of the Earths surface. Photographed in Spain on 18th July 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a rare and extraordinary event - a total solar eclipse that occurred on July 18,1860. Taken by the renowned British astronomer Warren de la Rue, this series of images showcases the Sun during the totality of the eclipse. The Moon's disc perfectly aligns with the Sun, obscuring its bright surface and revealing only its ethereal corona or atmosphere. De la Rue's groundbreaking photograph provided compelling evidence that the flares observed during an eclipse were indeed solar in origin. This significant discovery contributed to our understanding of celestial phenomena and furthered scientific knowledge in the field of astronomy. The moment of totality depicted in this image is fleeting, lasting only for a few precious minutes. Total solar eclipses are infrequent occurrences, happening less than once a year and visible from only specific areas on Earth's surface. In this particular instance, De la Rue captured this awe-inspiring spectacle in Spain. Transporting us back to the 19th century, this monochrome snapshot not only represents an important milestone in astronomical history but also serves as a testament to human curiosity about our place within the vastness of space. As we gaze upon this remarkable image today, we are reminded of both our fascination with celestial wonders and our relentless pursuit of scientific exploration.
