Solar system map from 1853
Historical map of the solar system, published in Germany in 1853. The main diagram shows the orbits of the first seven planets out to Uranus. Neptune had been discovered in 1846, but is only shown on the list at upper left. Pluto was not discovered until 1930. The phases of the Moon are illustrated at lower left. Details of Saturns rings are shown at upper right, while conjunctions of Mercury and Venus are shown at lower right. The main diagram, drawn to scale, shows how the inner solar system is tiny when compared to the vast distances of the outer solar system. The highly elliptical orbits of comets are shown, as well as the asteroid belt

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the year 1853, when a historical map of the solar system was published in Germany. The main diagram featured in this print showcases the orbits of the first seven planets, extending all the way out to Uranus. Interestingly, Neptune had already been discovered in 1846 but is only mentioned on a list at the upper left corner since it hadn't yet made its way onto the diagram. It's worth noting that Pluto wouldn't be discovered until much later, in 1930. The lower left portion of this map beautifully illustrates the phases of our Moon, while at upper right we are treated to intricate details of Saturn's magnificent rings. Meanwhile, lower right captures conjunctions between Mercury and Venus. What truly stands out about this remarkable piece is how accurately it portrays scale within our solar system. The main diagram draws attention to just how minuscule and compact our inner solar system appears when compared to the vast distances found within its outer reaches. Additionally, this extraordinary map also highlights other celestial phenomena such as highly elliptical comet orbits and even includes an illustration of our asteroid belt. A true testament to scientific progress during nineteenth-century Germany, this historical gem provides invaluable insights into humanity's understanding of our place within the cosmos.
