PSLV-C2 space rocket

Space rocket on the launch pad. This is the Indian Space Research Organisations Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C2. It was 44 metres tall, and had a lift-off weight of 295 tonnes. This rocket used both solid and liquid fuel for propulsion. It launched three satellites into Earth orbit on 26 May 1999. The main payload was IRS-P4 (OCEANSAT), an Indian satellite that monitors phytoplankton blooms in the worlds oceans. The other two satellites were the Korean KITSAT-3 and German DLR-TUBSAT. PSLV-C2 launched from Sriharikota, an island on the coast of the Bay of Bengal, north of Chennai

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring PSLV-C2 space rocket, standing tall on its launch pad. Developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), this technological marvel was an impressive 44 meters in height and weighed a staggering 295 tonnes at lift-off. Combining both solid and liquid fuels for propulsion, it possessed immense power. On that momentous day of May 26,1999, PSLV-C2 embarked on a crucial mission to deploy three satellites into Earth's orbit. The primary payload was IRS-P4 (OCEANSAT), an Indian satellite dedicated to monitoring phytoplankton blooms across our planet's oceans. Joining OCEANSAT were two other satellites: Korea's KITSAT-3 and Germany's DLR-TUBSAT. The launch took place from Sriharikota, an island nestled along the Bay of Bengal coast north of Chennai. This picturesque location served as ISRO's principal spaceport known as SHAR Centre – a hub where dreams merged with cutting-edge engineering. As we gaze upon this remarkable image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our world. It symbolizes India’s significant contributions to astrophysics and astronomy while highlighting Asia’s growing presence in space exploration. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness the harmonious blend between technology and nature; between human ingenuity and the vastness of the cosmos itself.
