Mount Sharp rock formations, Mars C014 / 4936

Mount Sharp rock formations, as imaged by NASAs Curiosity rover on Mars. This rover, part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, landed in the Gale Crater on 6 August 2012. Mount Sharps geology will be investigated by the rover as one of its science destinations. The colour here has been enhanced to aid analysis of the landscape as it would appear under the lighting conditions found on Earth. The rounded mound at centre is about 300 metres across and 100 metres high. This image is part of a larger one obtained on 23 August 2012 by the 100mm Mast Camera. For the original image, see C014/4935
