Computer graphic of section through human kidney
Kidney. Computer graphic of a section through a whole human kidney. At upper left is the renal artery and vein which supply blood to, and drain blood from the kidney. The artery forms a network of capillaries in the cortex of the kidney, ending in small tight knots called glomeruli (not seen). Glomeruli are blood filtering units from which excess water and metabolic wastes pass from the blood to nephrons, long tubules seen in the outer kidney. Nephrons filter these waste products into urine. The urine then drains into collecting ducts of each nephron, and finally into the ureter (at lower left). The ureter is a tube which passes urine into the bladder

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer graphic representation of a section through the intricate structure of a human kidney. The image provides an in-depth view of the renal artery and vein, which play vital roles in supplying and draining blood from this remarkable organ. At first glance, one can observe the network of capillaries formed by the artery within the kidney's cortex. Although not visible in this particular depiction, glomeruli are highlighted as essential components responsible for filtering excess water and metabolic waste products from the blood. These tiny knots act as efficient blood filtering units that enable nephrons to perform their crucial function. The outer region of the kidney reveals long tubules known as nephrons, which serve as filters for these waste substances before they are transformed into urine. As urine is produced, it flows through collecting ducts connected to each nephron until it eventually reaches the ureter located at the lower left corner of this visually stunning artwork. The ureter acts as a conduit transporting urine from the kidneys into our bladder, facilitating its storage until elimination occurs. This comprehensive illustration offers valuable insights into both anatomical structures and physiological processes within our urinary system. Presented by Science Photo Library, this extraordinary piece combines artistry with scientific accuracy to deliver an educational glimpse into one of our body's most complex organs - all captured through cutting-edge computer graphics technology.
