Columbus family tissue samples

Tissue samples. One tube contains a sample of tissue from what may be the remains of the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. Another belongs to an illegitimate son, Hernando, and the other is thought to be from Columbus son, Diego. The DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in the samples will be compared to determine whether remains in Seville, Spain, or in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, are those of Columbus. Columbus died in 1506 in Valladolid, Spain. He was first buried there before being moved in 1537 to Santo Domingo. In 1795 his remains were moved to Cuba, before finally moving to Seville in 1898. It is possible the wrong remains were taken to Cuba. Degradation and contamination of the DNA has hampered the analysis

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a trio of carefully labeled tubes containing tissue samples that hold the potential to unravel one of history's greatest mysteries. The first tube contains a sample believed to be from the remains of Christopher Columbus, the renowned Italian explorer who changed the course of human history. Alongside it, another tube holds tissue from his illegitimate son, Hernando, while the third is thought to contain tissue from Columbus' son Diego. These precious DNA samples are at the center of an intense scientific investigation aiming to determine whether Columbus' final resting place lies in Seville, Spain or Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. After passing through various locations over centuries - Valladolid in Spain where he was initially buried after his death in 1506; then moved to Santo Domingo in 1537; and later transferred to Cuba in 1795 before finally reaching Seville in 1898 - doubts have arisen about whether his remains were mistakenly taken to Cuba. However, this crucial analysis faces significant challenges due to degradation and contamination that has affected the DNA within these historic tissues. A team of dedicated geneticists and researchers equipped with state-of-the-art biochemistry tools will meticulously compare these samples for conclusive evidence. As we gaze upon this image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how science continues its relentless pursuit even through time's passage. This photograph encapsulates both hope and uncertainty as it represents humanity's quest for truth amidst historical enigmas.
