Jigsaw Puzzle : Albertus Magnus, German theologian
Jigsaw Puzzles from Science Photo Library
Albertus Magnus, German theologian
Albertus Magnus (1193-1280), German theologian, lecturing and holding a staff. Albertus was a Dominican friar and bishop who believed in the peaceful coexistence of science and religion. Medieval philosophers relied heavily on the logic of Aristotle, translated and summarised by Boethius and in the commentaries of the Arab-Spaniard Averroes. Albertus was the first scholar to apply Aristotles philosophy to Christian thought. This engraving, where he is described as Bishop of Regensburg, is from Les vrais pourtraits et vies des hommes illustres (1584) by the French writer and explorer Andre Thevet (1502-1590)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Albertus Magnus, a renowned German theologian of the 13th century. In this engraving from Les vrais pourtraits et vies des hommes illustres by Andre Thevet, Albertus is depicted as the Bishop of Regensburg, holding a staff and lecturing with great authority. As a Dominican friar and bishop, he firmly believed in the harmonious coexistence of science and religion. During medieval times, philosophers heavily relied on Aristotle's logic, which was translated and summarized by Boethius and further expounded upon by Averroes, an Arab-Spaniard commentator. However, it was Albertus who became the first scholar to apply Aristotle's philosophy to Christian thought. The illustration beautifully captures his profile as he preaches from the Bible within the grandeur of a cathedral setting. With his mitre adorning his head and crozier in hand, Albertus exudes wisdom and reverence for his faith. Albertus Magnus' contributions to theology and philosophy were groundbreaking during his time. His teachings bridged gaps between reason and faith while emphasizing their interconnectedness. This artwork serves as a testament to his significant role in shaping religious discourse during the Middle Ages. Science Photo Library has expertly preserved this historical piece that not only highlights Albertus' intellectual prowess but also provides insight into art history from 1584. It allows us to appreciate both the artistic skill employed in its creation as well as its cultural significance within medieval Europe.
