EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Blackburn Kangaroo biplane, a former WW1 bomber that was acquired by the intrepid explorer Captain Wilkins in 1919. Later known as Sir Hubert Wilkins, he purchased this aircraft with the intention of participating in an air race sponsored by the Australian Government. The stakes were high, with a handsome prize of £10,000 awaiting the first All-Australian crew to successfully fly from England to Australia. Lieutenants Val Rendle and D R Williams took on the responsibility of piloting this magnificent machine, while Wilkins assumed his role as navigator and Lieutenant Potts served as engineer. Departing from Hounslow in West London on November 21st, 1919, their journey seemed promising. However, fate had other plans for them. On December 8th, tragedy struck when a serious oil leak forced them to abandon their flight and return to Suda Bay in Crete. Despite their valiant efforts and unwavering determination, they were unable to continue towards their ultimate destination. The photograph immortalizes not only this iconic aircraft but also the spirit of adventure and daring exploration that defined an era. It serves as a testament to human ambition and resilience in the face of adversity. Preserved through time by Mirrorpix's Memory Lane Prints collection, this image transports us back to a pivotal moment in aviation history – one that reminds us of both triumphs achieved and dreams unfulfilled within our shared human journey through innovation and discovery
