EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph, published in 1855 by Verlag von Krais & Hoffmann in Stuttgart, Germany, showcases the skeletons of two extinct giants of the American continent: the Megatherium and the Mastodon giganteus, also known as the American mastodon or Mammut americanum. Dr. F.A. Schmidt's Petrefactenbuch, or "Book of Petrifications," was a groundbreaking work that introduced both the specialist and general reader to the fascinating world of fossils and palaeontology. The Megatherium, meaning "great beast," was a giant ground sloth, measuring up to 10 feet tall and weighing as much as 11 tons. Its elongated limbs and powerful claws were adapted for climbing trees and digging burrows. The skeleton on the left side of the image reveals its massive size and the intricacies of its skeletal structure. The Mastodon giganteus, or American mastodon, was a large elephant-like creature, with tusks that could reach up to 12 feet in length. This herbivore roamed the grasslands and forests of North America during the Pleistocene epoch. Its skeleton, depicted on the right side of the image, reveals its massive size and the impressive curvature of its tusks and backbone. The intricate details of these skeletons, carefully hand-colored and meticulously rendered in lithography, offer a glimpse into the past, allowing us to marvel at the incredible diversity of life that once inhabited our planet. This image is a testament to the importance of Dr. Schmidt's work in documenting and sharing the wonders of the natural world with future generations.
