EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph, titled "Fossil Skulls and Skeletons," is an exquisite example of the remarkable discoveries in the field of paleontology during the late 19th century. The image, part of Dr. Fr. Rolles' Geology and Paleontology section in Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert's Natural History, published by Schreiber in Munich in 1886, showcases an impressive array of fossil skulls and skeletons of various extinct animals. At the center of the composition, the skull of a man from the Furfoosa Cave in Italy is depicted, along with those of other intriguing creatures. Among them are the aurochs, or wild oxen, represented by both a large bull and a cow. The mighty cave bear, Ursus spelaeus, is also present, with its powerful jaw and sharp teeth. Additionally, the skeletons of the giants sloth, Megatherium cuvieri, and the woolly rhinoceros, Coelodonta antiquitatis, are displayed. The rhino, Rhinoceros stichorhinus, is represented by its skull, while the mineralogy section includes various minerals and geological specimens. The image also features the skulls of the extinct animals, such as the Bos primigenius, an ancestor of modern cattle, and the Rhinoceros unicornis, a rhinoceros with a single horn. This chromolithograph is a testament to the groundbreaking research and discoveries in the fields of geology, paleontology, and natural history during the late 19th century. Dr. Fr. Rolles, a renowned scholar and scientist, was a pioneer in the study of fossils, and his work was instrumental in advancing our understanding of the natural world. The Natural History publication by Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert, which includes this chromolithograph, was a significant contribution to the scientific community and remains an important historical document today.
