EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph showcases six exquisite butterflies: the Pied Piper, Eurytela hiarbas (1, 2), the Green False Acraea, Pseudacraea semire (3, 4), and the Forest Admiral, Antanartia delius (5, 6). The image, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, captures both the upper (dorsal) and under (ventral) sides of these captivating insects. The Pied Piper butterfly, also known as the Wanderer, is characterized by its black wings with distinctive white spots and red edges. The Green False Acraea, on the other hand, boasts vibrant green wings adorned with intricate black patterns. The Forest Admiral, a large and striking butterfly, displays a rich brown upper surface with orange and black markings, while its under side is a brilliant orange. The lithograph's intricate details and vibrant colours bring out the unique features of each butterfly, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art. The Pied Piper, Green False Acraea, and Forest Admiral are all native to Central and South America, and were likely collected and brought back to Europe for study and documentation during the 19th century. This beautiful work of art not only showcases the natural beauty of these butterflies but also serves as a testament to the fascination and curiosity that Europeans had for the exotic wonders of the natural world during this time period.
