After a series of disastrous events, including heavy casualties and failed military strategies, Hamilton was recalled to England. It was then that Monro stepped in and recommended an immediate withdrawal from the Dardanelles.
His recommendation was met with agreement from Lord Kitchener, and thus began the evacuation process which would ultimately be carried out with practically no further casualties. This decision marked a turning point in the campaign, saving countless lives and preventing further loss on both sides.
