This historical print captures the pivotal moment when General Charles Carmichael Monro was sent as a replacement to Sir Ian Hamilton in the Dardanelles campaign of October 1915. After a series of disastrous events, including heavy casualties and failed military strategies, Hamilton was recalled to England. It was then that Monro stepped in and recommended an immediate withdrawal from the Dardanelles.
His recommendation was met with agreement from Lord Kitchener, and thus began the evacuation process which would ultimately be carried out with practically no further casualties. This decision marked a turning point in the campaign, saving countless lives and preventing further loss on both sides.
