EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph features an Adélie penguin specimen, scientifically known as Pygoscelis adeliae, collected during Sir Robert Falcon Scott's British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-1913, also known as the Terra Nova Expedition. The specimen was meticulously prepared by the expedition's surgeon, Murray Levick, at Cape Adare in 1911. Levick's three-month-long study of Adélie penguins during their breeding season was one of the earliest of its kind, providing invaluable insights into their behavior and ecology. Adélie penguins are a species of seabird found primarily in the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. They are characterized by their distinctive black and white plumage, with a white belly and black back and head. The Adélie penguin is named after Adélie Land, a region claimed by France in the Antarctic. This studio shot of the Adélie penguin specimen was likely taken soon after its collection. The pristine white background emphasizes the beauty and intricacy of the penguin's features, revealing every detail of its anatomy. The image is a testament to the remarkable work of Murray Levick and the groundbreaking research conducted during the Terra Nova Expedition. The study of sauropsids, a group of reptiles and birds, has advanced significantly since Levick's time. However, this photograph remains an important historical record of one of the earliest ornithological studies in the Antarctic, shedding light on the natural history of the Adélie penguin and the harsh, yet breathtaking, environment of Antarctica.
