EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic portrait of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a prominent figure in 18th-century philosophy and literature. Created in 1777 through the meticulous techniques of etching and engraving, this artwork is a testament to the skill and artistry of its creators. The fourth state of this print, masterfully executed by Bocher, captures Rousseau's essence with remarkable detail. Measuring approximately 13 1/16 by 9 15/16 inches (331 x 252 cm), it is an impressive representation of the renowned philosopher. Augustin de Saint Aubin, a French artist from Paris who lived between 1736 and 1807, skillfully reproduced Maurice Quentin La Tour's original work depicting Rousseau. This particular image was included in the first volume of "Julie ou la Nouvelle Héloïse: Lettres de deux amans habitans d'une petite ville au pied des Alpes" collected and published by J. J. Rousseau himself in London between 1774 and 1783. As you gaze upon this mesmerizing print, you are transported back to a time when Rousseau's ideas revolutionized society. It serves as a powerful reminder of his intellectual contributions that continue to shape our understanding of politics, education, and human nature.
